So….clearly, we are having problems with King Gardens in Toronto, Ontario.  They are owned by a company called Revera, Inc.

But we are not alone….small consolation.  On the front page of the Toronto Star (last Monday) was an article about another one of their facilites…..  an elderly woman passed away, but the funeral home couldn’t take her away until a doctor confirmed her death.  Despite being called..the on-call doctor didn’t show up for 14 HOURS.  The poor woman was so decomposed, her family could not perform their traditional rituals for death.

Here’s the link to the article:  http://www.thestar.com/article/447809

I am told Revera, Inc. also manages multiple nursing home/assisted care facilites in the U.S.  Lovely, no?

Hate them.

Without hitting every last detail….here’s the latest on my poor grammy’s terrible ordeal:

Grammy was seen in the emergency room on Friday (after a 5+ hour wait).  The good news:  they determined the distended tummy was not life threatening…she was blocked up by the pain killers.  The bad news: they didn’t check her back any further…so, now, after coming home for the weekend, she is heading back out tomorrow to have x-rays done.  I’m praying they take her to an x-ray facility and not back to the ER (if she only needs x-rays, she’ll be at the bottom of the priority list and will likely be there for 12+ hours waiting on a gurnery in the hallway)  And…they won’t medicate her while she waits.

Dad was there Thurs-Sun…she is in tremendous pain.  They are giving her pain medication, but it isn’t enough.  When I called her this evening…she answered the phone as though I had raised her from the dead…and then said, “Oh, Darlin’, I’ve fallen and am in a great deal of pain.  I can’t talk.”  I was concerned she had fallen again, but was able to determine she was sitting on the edge of the bed.  Getting up and down is extrememly painful for her.

As a result of her Alzheimers (which is now worse than ever) she can’t remember what is happening from one moment to the next.  She doesn’t remember that my dad was there. She actually thought my dad was her husband for quite a bit of the time he was there.  She didn’t know that her son was my dad.  She forgets to lay still until she is again reminded by serious pain.

I feel helpless.  My poor mom had to get off the phone with me tonight to cry.  We are all sick to our stomachs.

The facility has suspended the Executive Director and head nurse, but are now saying this has all been a ‘miscommunication issue’.  They claim Grams has a history of fallling (according to her chart, she fell ONE TIME IN 2005) and that they often find her sleeping on the floor. (outright lie)  They also now claim that maybe her back isn’t really broken…apparently their HEAD NURSE may have read the hospital report incorrectly (the head nurse doesn’t know how to read hospital reports????  and the ‘fracured L-2’ isn’t serious?)  I hate these people.

They offered to pay for my dad’s trip for his ‘trouble’.  Sounds like an itty-bitty admission of guilt, no?  Dad’s too smart to fall for that.  Told them there would be plenty of time to talk money.  PS…this facility is NOT FREE~!  How’s this for $3000/month care?

Bottom line….Grammy is in bad shape.  She is in miserable pain, yet surrounded by people who aren’t paying enough attention to make sure she is cared for.  Mom is getting back on the phone tomorrow to get her pain medication increased…since we’re told it could be 6-8 weeks before her back is any better.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your prayer and love.  She needs it.  So do my parents.

This beautiful lady you see in this picture is my grandmother.  She is posing with me on my first birthday, 30-some years ago.  At 95, she is the only grandparent I have left, and the only one I have ever really known.

For my entire childhood, Grams, or Grammy as I call her (she calls me darlin’) spent at least 4 months of the year with us…one month at Christmas and 3 months over the summer.

She always arrived from Canada with chocolate chip cookies and rice crispy treats that were divine (to this day, I can’t eat anyone else’s rice crispy treats b/c they just aren’t as good as hers).

She is a tremendously private person, but so sharp and quite funny.  She wouldn’t hesitate to ask me to grab her ‘another glass of hooch’ (of course once I was an adult).  But she spoke very little about her past, revealing little insights here and there.  This sweet little lady wore the very same dress to my wedding that she wore to my parent’s 30 years before. She refused to get another dress when she had this perfectly good one in her closet that she had only worn one time.

She is stubborn.  She was the youngest of 5 girls.  My dad is her ony child.  She separated from my grandfather when my dad was a teenager.  My grandfather died before I was born, when my dad was only 21 years old.  She lived alone for more than 50 years before she was moved to an assisted living facility a few years ago.  She has alzheimers. She usually knows me when I call, but often doesn’t remember that I’m married or have children.  She doesn’t realize that Mom and Dad don’t live close by…and is always surprised to learn I’m out of the country too. She was, until last Friday, in remarkable physical health for her 95 years.

I am sick to my stomach just thinking about what she has been through in the past week.

Last Friday she apparently fell.  And then apparently she fell again on Saturday.  The story is all very hazy since the assisted living facility didn’t call my parents to notify them until Saturday (and, at the time, didn’t mention this was her second fall).  And they left a message at my mom’s work. Not home. Not cell, but work.  On a Saturday.  They said they found her asleep on the floor and she was refusing to go to the hospital.  They left a second message on Saturday night.  Again at Mom’s work.  This time saying they had taken her to the hospital and she had a broken wrist and was complaining of  back pain.  The hospital gave her percocet (pain killer) and sent her home with NO ADDITIONAL MEDICATION.  Of course, my parents didn’t learn any of this until MONDAY at 9am (West Coast time…Grammy is in Eastern Canada)

I’ll avoid the details of all the back and forth, but my parents have fielded one lie after another as they have tried to find out what is going on.  There was no one ‘in charge’ available to talk to Mom or Dad on Monday.  When Dad tried to talk to Grammy, she refused his call saying she was in too much pain.  Dad could hear her crying and yelling out in pain (still no meds for the pain).  I talked to her briefly and she put on a good front for me.  She said, “Well, Darlin’, I’m not quite feeling 100%.” (she’s strong like that….really doesn’t want anyone to know she’s hurting) It wasn’t until Tuesday that we found out she had fallen first on Friday.  And it wasn’t until yesterday that we were told she has A BROKEN BACK!!!  And, this news is from the x-rays done on SATURDAY.

My sweet little 95 year old grandmother (who cannot be an advocate for herself b/c of the alzheimers) has had a broken back for days, crying out in pain, with no pain medication.  They finally got a doctor in to see her today.  In addition to the broken wrist and broken back, her stomach is distended.  We don’t know why, but the options aren’t uplifting.

So…at this very moment, she is at the hospital, having just had x-rays done (which caused her tremendous pain. The women who would smile through a broken bone instead of admitting to the pain was crying and yelling out during the tests).  The only bright light in all of this is that my Dad is now with her and will make sure she is taken care of.  She is comforted in the presence of her only child.

I am so angry.  I am so disgusted.  I am appalled.  I have cried.  I have sworn.  I have a headache.  My parents are distraught.  They are exhausted….yet nothing compares to what Grammy has been going through.  This isn’t an oversight…this doesn’t only warrant ‘an investigation’ as the management company has claimed….this is pure negligence. My grandmother has been treated is such a despicable fashion….a dog wouldn’t be allowed to wallow in pain with a broken back for DAYS without a doctor or medication.

Must stop now.  Must say sweet prayers for Grammy.  Must send her love and positive energy.

I told Mom, I think I was prepared for her to pass away.  She is 95 and has lived a full life.  But nothing could have prepared me for this.

Goodnight, Grammy…we love you.

I’ll set the scene for you:

This little girl has to go to the bathroom.  She invites me in (demands my presence) when she has to poop.  I walk in.

“Mommy, will you close the door so I can have some privacy?”  No problem.  Door closed.

“Thanks, Mommy.  Now, just let me get my magazine.  I like to read when I have to poop.”  She proceeds to pick up the magazine and holds it closely as she puts the Dora potty seat in place and pulls her pants down.

She climbs up, shorts and panties around her ankles and starts to ‘read’ her magazine.  (BTW, her magazine is Jeff’s Mizzou Alumni Mag)

It is at this point that I ask her if I can take a picture.  She politely, but firmly refused.  Can’t blame her, but (damn) it would have been a great pic.  Her childhood mind probably warned her of the doom that would follow if I was allowed to forever document the moment (and therefore potentially embarass her during her teenage years.)

Smart of her.

My husband is gone for the next month.  Training for a new job.  He will get to come home July 3-5th, but other than that….the kids have only me.

Which isn’t so bad during the day.

But nighttime….well, that’s a different story.  For 3 1/2 hours last night, Coop called out for his daddy.

“Daddy….where are you?”, “Daddy?  You lay down with me?”, “Daddy???”

He’s only 2, so, daddy being ‘in New York’ only makes so much sense.

I lay down with him, I held him when he asked me to….I even brought him into bed with me…but he was so restless.  He finally asked to go back to his bed because “I don yike u bed, Mommy.”  At least he finally got some sleep.

As much as this literally hurt my heart…what would I do if Jeff was deployed for a year or more?  How do those (incredibly strong) mommys manage?  And worse….God forbid….what if something ever happened to Jeff?  I don’t think I can even go there….it makes me sick to my stomach to even think about.

So…I suppose, despite the midnight heartbreak..we are lucky b/c we know he’s coming home.

So….let me set the scene for you.

I’m in Linens N Things….scouting out a little home decor (we’ve only been in our house for 18 months…figure it is time for me to get on the ball).

I’m singing along to the music overhead as I approach the end of an aisle.  What do I see at the end of the aisle?  A fabulous woman in her 50’s shaking her booty…singing and dancing to the music.  She’s playing it up for a few friends and turns three shades of red when she realizes I’ve caught her.  We share a quick laugh.  When she is in line behind me a few minutes later, she jokes that she is following me b/c she heard I was going to pay for her items.  I honestly wish I could have…and I told her so.  I said, “wouldn’t that be fun?  To just take care of someone’s bill for them?”

She responded…”yes, it is fun…I’ve done it.  A few weeks ago, my family and I were at a local restaurant and noticed a serviceman in uniform and his family eating at a nearby table.  I know how little they make, I’ve had three kids in the military…and if it wasn’t for them, we couldn’t be free.  So, we told our waiter we wanted to take care of their bill.  We stopped by their table to tell them how beautiful and well behaved their children were….and then we hid close by to hear their reaction when the waiter told them their meal was free.  It was the best feeling.”

I was actually JEALOUS as she was telling the story.  I got goosebumps.  I can’t wait to do it.

Happy, Generous, Giving, ExtraordinaryMommy in Linens N Things…..I think you are the BEST!  Thank you for making my day!

Make me absolutely insane????

Have you seen this thing?  Better yet, have you heard it?

Of course….you would have had to have decided that McDonald’s was acceptable dinner fare for your children sometime in the last week to have the pleasure of this Kung Fu Panda’s company.

Any time you so much as walk by the damn thing it yells, “Ska-doosh” or a crazy kung fu sound like “Yaaaa Haaa”.

Why do I know this?  Because Mini had it in the car with her….and when she got out…she left it in her car seat….JUST OUT OF MY REACH.  Every. Single. Time. I. Turned. A. Corner. Or. Breaked. It. Ska-dooshed. At. Me.

Haven’t even seen the movie…yet I feel compelled to say “Ska-Doosh” several times a day.

This would be funny if I was 6 years old.  Not so much in your mid 30’s.  I’m just sayin’.
